Day 8 - Flavors of Alsace

Updated: Aug 2, 2023

I continue to fight with getting pictures uploaded, would rather be topside than in my room working on it.

The day started at 10AM with a bus ride to Strasbourg and a walk toward the city. Our first food was Kugelhopf with Raisins, a kind of thick Raisin bread cake. We learned of the round fluted terra cotta it baked in and moved on.

More old buildings, built and rebuilt for centuries, and time for chocolate and Macaroons. Not only was the macaroon filling very good (I had raspberry) the cookie was soft because they leave the product overnight in the fridge and the cookie absorbs sone of the liquid.

Now it was time for lunch.

We had the local favorite Tarte Flambe. Don't call it pizza. It is a vey thin flatbread with a white sauce, cheese and other toppings. Others had beer, I still have no taste for beer.

Toppings include onions, mushrooms, bacon, swiss cheese, Muenster cheese in different combinations. There is also a sweet one that tasted like an apple tart.

Next stop was cheese to help us digest, Mountain Cheese and Muenster. The Muenster was not pasteurized and was much more flavorful than what you get in the Megamarts.

Another church tour. Ok, I started very excited about the churches as I like the architecture, but after the 4th or 5th. I get it. This church has history ine movie/book The Monument Men. Something to stream on the way home tomorrow.

We haf an hour to be on our own. I went for a 1/2 muke walk around the shopping area and then it was tine for Gingerbread.

There are 7 different spices in their Gingerbread. They also made it into energy bars, which was only my 2nd souvinere purchase.

Now wine tasting. We had a white, a red and sparkling. I have no palate. I can taste the difference between dry and sweet and white and red.

I liked the charcuterie plate. The goat cheese was very creamy and mild. The Pork cheek and Vegetable sausage was tasty, but the texture was odd.

Finally at 5pm, and 11,500 steps later we were back to the ship.

Sadly, we had our disembarkation instructions at the nights port talk. I am lucky, bags out at 7:30, depart at 8:30am.

Dinner was a German buffet. I was too full from the day, and had a tasting (bite or 2) of everything. I was not hungry for dessert

After dinner we got a chance to sit on the sundeck and watch us go through a lock. Looks just like they show on TV...

Last day of activities tomorrow 😢
