Day 9 - Cuckoo Clocks and Cake

Updated: Aug 2, 2023

It was a late start to the day since my tour did not leave until 1:30 PM. After my morning coffee while overlooking the river, I walked around the small town of Breisach. There was nothing special to the city as many went to Colmar, France for more WWII history. I forgot that it was Sunday and many shops were closed.

After a simple Roast Beef sandwich for lunch, and as one would expect being so near France, the baguette bread was outstanding.

We got on out buses and spent 90 minutes driving through the countryside learning about the history of the area as we headed to the Black Forest.

We stopped and had many options, I chose not to go on the hike. Many people only went about 1/2 mile before turning back because of the difficulty of the path.

I spent the first bit learning the history of and watching a demonstration of how a cuckoo clock is made. They showed us how to tell how the size of the weights and how many weights determines how often it is would and how they are used. One weight is for the pendulum, one is for the cuckoo and if there is a third it is for the music or characters.

We then had some time to visit the other shops. I got to see a demonstration of glass blowing and taste some berry wine.

Now it was time to taste Black Forest Cake. It was divine. Then they had a demonstration of how it was made. There is a lot of whipped cream (no sugar) in this cake, according to the recipe card they gave us, there is 8 Cups to make a cake.

We had to meet the ship a a specific time, because it had moved to a port where there was nothing there or to do. There was a different route back to the ship and more history to learn.

After the very rich cake, I was not that hungry for dinner, but managed to eat the fish served at dinner. When the plate came, everyone else had 3 muscles on their plates, I had none. I made note to the waiter, and shortly received a bowl of 10 that I shared with the table.

Now the second saddest part of the trip, packing and waiting for 70:30 AM to put my luggage in the hallway, because tomorrow we leave.
